One reason to consult a native English speaker before selecting a restaurant name:
...at least check Google to see what else it can mean!
Spotted this in Hongdae today. This used to be the Wood and Brick restaurant, the best (and most expensive) place to eat around here. However, no matter how many times Una and I dined there just wasn't enough support in this cheap-ass university area. Enter "BLACK JOY ISLAND," Hongdae's new "KOREAN BLACK FOOD RESTAURANT".
Now I don't know about you, but when I hear of a "Korean black food restaurant," I think of a couple of guys likely named Mr. Kim and Mr. Lee opening up a new franchise of Roscoe's House of Chicken n Waffles--but adding red pepper to everything.
And when I read "black joy island," I picture me, Beyonce, a private island, and a crate of Viagra.
UPDATE: I've found the idiots who came up with this restaurant's name! "Inword Branding" deserves an award for skilled konglishization of English. Look around in their "naming" category for other winners, like my personal favorite "SH Ville"--their devised name for an apartment development. But I wonder, what if the "SH" company decided to make their next development really high-tech, you know, with lots of information technology... "SH IT Ville", anyone?

Back from Thailand! :)
Hey man, I think the new layout is working out great... with the wide pictures and all.
lol @ Black joy.
How and the fuck do you know anything about Roscoe's House? :)
NoCAL boy.
WTF, the marshmallow is calling the cracker "white"?! :P
Where the fawk have I been...LOVE the makeover! When did it happen?????? I also really enjoyed the photos from your friend's wedding I love seeing people in hanbuks.
can't believe Wood'n'Brick closed, I mean it was always empty and all, but the food is ace.
There's still the one near Gwanghwamun anyway.
Mmmm Beyonce.
Top place for eats in Hongdae right now might just be that new Italian restaurant "Piatto" on the 2nd floor of that new building between "Club Hole" and a new noraebang with with white paint and the most acid triprific lights in all of Seoul. But it ain't Wood & Brick.
I really need to get my restaurant reviews going on here...
Someone should invite Hines Ward over to this restaurant just in case he likes "Korean Black Food".

HEY!!! Cool to meet you FINALLY!!!!!
"Korean Black Food" isn't so bad. We have a pachinko parlour in the next town over called "Slot Screw". It's on the opposite side of the train station from the "Bosom Building". Our local car dealership was until a month or so ago called "Risky". Kid ye not.
