Sunset Over Mapo-Gu

Ok, so the update that I thought would happen this past weekend didn't.  Going to the language school has taken a significant chunk of my time and my dignity.  While I was top of the class last week, as expected after being here almost two years before enrolling in LEVEL 1, today I saw myself drop to the bottom.  I knew it would happen. My friends said that's just the way it goes for whitey. They said the Japanese would kick ass, and that I'd be struggling along with the Chinese.  Not only are these the only other two groups in my class, save for one Chinese-American girl who's fluent in Japanese, but it's looking like the Chinese are the class scholars, which can only mean that everyone will think I've got some sort of learning disability by week's end.

Winds drug up Mongolia's Gobi Desert in an attempt to transplant it to Korea over the weekend, giving the sky a yellow-tinted foggy complexion.  The pollution reached a pinnacle like I'd never seen on Sunday night with 1.5+ grams of crap in the air for every cubic meter.  Honestly, the air smelled like dirt.

Luckily the rains that swept through last night and early this morning cleared out for a afternoon of blue skies and fluffly clouds, concluding with the sunset pictured above.

Buddha's birthday is this week.  I've got to remember to actually make it down to the parade this year!

such a great photo!

Nice colors in the photo.

I don't think Buddha's birthday is until May 5, though. At least, that's when my school's celebrating it.

Thanks for the comments... This photo wouldn't have been possible if I didn't a) shoot with a neutral exposure so that there was a minimum of under and over exposure in the frame, and then consequently b) use Photoshop CS2's shadows and highlights tool to readjust the exposure. In fact, I've been using that tool on almost every photo that I've put up here in the past couple of months or so.

As for Buddha's birthday, in Korea, you were right G. The main celebration is on May 5th. That will be a big day at the temples. But elsewhere I've read that the downtown parade will be on May 29-30. Two days? Odd.

I had a great time at the parade last year, but the best part about Buddha's birthday is all of the lanterns they hang in the temples before and after the big day. Two days. Whatever.

Great photo.
